Volunteering for DIAL Solihull

All DIAL volunteers have a disability themselves, or an interest in and sympathy with disability matters and problems and direct experience of the challenges these can bring.

Many of the volunteers have come to us from the Day Centre or are ex-clients, and a number have gone on to volunteer for other organisations, or to find paid work.

Training is mainly in-house and geared to the interests and preferred speed of learning of the volunteer as well as to the needs of the organisation.

Volunteer Stories

My name is Bob and I have been a volunteer at DIAL Solihull since 1994. I went to the Lowbrook Day Centre after amputation of my right leg and was introduced to DIAL Solihull, who represented me at a tribunal. I was asked if I would like to join DIAL Solihull as their newsletter editor and was later appointed Vice Chairman.

I assist with benefit forms and other queries. I enjoy volunteering because of the satisfaction i get from helping others, knowing that they need it.

My name is Eileen and I have been a volunteer at DIAL Solihull since 1996. I contacted DIAL Solihull when I had to stop work because of my disability and they helped me sort out my benefits. As I wasn't working I got pointed in DIAL Solihullís direction and I realised volunteers were needed. I had an interview and started to work here, two mornings a week.

I maintain our client enquiry records, answer the telephone and help with benefit checks. I enjoy volunteering because it provides contact with other people and allows me to make new friends. I like the feeling of helping others, as I was helped myself, and providing a useful service for the community.

My name is Pam and I have been a volunteer since 2003. I used to be a client at the Greenacres Day Centre where I met Bob, another volunteer. He told me all about DIAL Solihull and the things they do. Because I have a disability I understand what it's like, and I thought this understanding would benefit people in similar situations who rely on help from DIAL Solihull.

I work mostly in admin and am also a trustee. I enjoy the satisfaction of helping people, the friendly atmosphere, and the company of the other volunteers and clients. I like to know that i'm helping people. It makes me feel good, arriving home and knowing i've helped someone, and they donít even know it.
